Can we not just offset by buying trees?
A typical tree will offset 16.3 kgs of CO2 each year so we would need 10 trees to offset the purchase.
Trees take time to mature and have different levels of CO2 absorption so make sure you need the purchase in the first place
Importance of using of a drill
Spur of the moment paddle board trip? Always wanted to surf, but can’t afford the equipment? Want to try out some DIY? RentMy makes all these possible. Adventure seekers can try out the equipment which fits their needs and return when finished. Avoid carrying equipment which only takes up space in your home when not being used. This is a great option for those who love variety - try something new, and if you love it, you can always rent again, or buy your own equipment once you are sure you will use it.
Renting is far cheaper than buying - a great option for low-commitment, sporadic users! If you have an unused item lying around your home, as we all do, consider renting it out to free up some space while earning some extra money. There’s the added benefit of introducing your hobby to someone who may otherwise have not had access to it.
Manufacturing anything new creates emissions. Especially for products you only use now and then, it makes more sense (for both your pocket, and for the environment) to rent instead of buy.
Our community of seasoned renters are here to give you the tips you need. For insider advice, check out our Instagram and Facebook pages, or spark a discussion in our forum. No need to spend hours traipsing through outdoor shops. You can message owners directly to ask any questions, and of course, RentMy stands by to help out in the unlikely event you have any issues with your rental.
Our expertly-researched environmental policy guides and informs all of our business and product decisions. We consider the life cycle of all our products and services and continuously redesign them to be as sustainable as possible. We go far beyond our legal obligations and anticipate future trends to provide the best service, ahead of the pack.
Our platform’s search filters help you search for items closeby. This is significant when you consider that new products are generally produced in factories in faroff countries, transported by lorry, flown around the world, and ferried to your local store, generating a far larger carbon footprint than necessary.
Flying is the most carbon-intensive means of transport and adds significantly to anyone’s carbon footprint. We only fly when absolutely necessary, and when it is, we use economy flights (which have a lower footprint).
We have signed up to a renewable energy supplier or our electricity needs.
By renting products, we avoid the resource costs associated with making and packaging products. The product (with purchasing) is purchased by the owner, and rented out packaging-free to each new users, helping you reduce your waste.
Our platform enables you to find local products, minimising transportation needs.
Check out our social media for new tips and hints on minimising your carbon footprint while using your rental products.
By maximising the use of products, we reduce the need for disposal. Giving new life to unused products reduces waste.
Renting items has significantly lower carbon intensity than buying (based on normal usage)
RentMy uses low carbon and circular economy principles
The Team at RentMy are adopting low carbon principles in the business
The average UK citizen has a CO2 footprint of 7,500kgs per year (2018). Buying new things like sports equipment and DIY equipment could add as much as 500kgs to your footprint.
Switching to RentMy is a big step in the right direction. Not only do you reduce your carbon footprint, you will save money, support the local economy, and become part of a greater green revolution.
The calculations for the carbon footprint of the different items has been based on the CO2 emissions per kilogram of different types of materials and products. These are high level estimates and should be treated as guidelines
It is not a Life Cycle Assessment. A detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) will give a more accurate number and incorporate additional factors. While an LCA can provide a more specific carbon footprint the basic principles we have applied are still valid.
